The Dutch photographer Adriaan Backer (1966) studied history, and made his debut as a photographer in 1993 with a photo essay that appeared in the Dutch weekly ‘Elsevier’. In 2000, he completed his first photo essay on AIDS, a subject that has gripped him ever since. Working as a photographer in Africa and the countries of the former Soviet Union, Adriaan has used his camera to capture all of the dark sides of the HIV epidemic. Adriaan wants his work to wake up people in the West. 'Everyone needs to know how reality looks', he states.
